The BIG MYTH - Leather is "natural" and eco-friendly

Leather is not a by-product of the meat industry as often stated. Every part of a slaughtered animal is sold to ensure maximum financial profit. Millions of pigs, dairy cows, cattle, sheep, and goats are slaughtered annually in the UK for footwear and leather goods. Specialty/exotic hides are sourced from crocodile, reptiles, kangaroos and other animals.

Tanneries consume much energy and are very polluting. Toxic chemical such as zinc, lead, dyes, cyanide-based chemicals and formaldehyde are used with obvious negative environmental impact. This treatment leads to leather decomposing very slowly and a greater quantity of refuse.

People suffer too! Many who live near or work in tanneries are dying from cancer caused by exposure to the toxic chemicals used.

The use of land for grazing, the vast amounts of water, feed produced for animals and animal waste produced contribute further to the negative environmental impact. Cattle are subjected to a range of farming methods and procedures and are slaughtered years before their natural life expectancy.

Meat industry – A serious environmental threat

In a groundbreaking 2006 report, the United Nations (U.N.) said that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official Henning Steinfeld reported that the meat industry is "one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems."
