Through renewing, repairing, and making, participants will explore their creativity, learn practical hand skills, and discover how small stitches and thoughtful patchwork can bring old textiles and keepsakes back to life.
In this course, you’ll uncover the history and beauty of Sashiko and Boro — two traditional Japanese crafts that celebrate mindfulness, sustainability, and care for what we already have.
Sashiko focuses on decorative hand stitching to strengthen and embellish fabric
Boro is the art of patchwork repair — layering and mending worn cloth to create something new and meaningful
Each workshop encourages slowing down, enjoying the process, and learning how visible mending and upcycling can be both creative and rewarding.

10 Workshops: 14/21/28 Jan, 4/11/25 Feb, 4/11/18/25 March
Format: 10 × 1-hour weekly sessions
Location: East Sheen SW14 (venue details shared upon booking)
Who It’s For: 9+ years, supervised with independent sewing
What You’ll Learn
🪡 How to safely thread and use a Sashiko needle
🧵 Practice traditional Sashiko stitching techniques on fabric samplers
🩹 Explore Boro patchwork repair methods — layering, reinforcing, and upcycling old textiles
✨ Apply your new skills to a personal project: mend a piece of clothing, restore a keepsake, or design something entirely new
After learning the core techniques, you’ll choose your own creative project. The possibilities are endless — repair, renew, or reimagine. You decide what you’d like to make!
