YOUR GUIDE TO RECYCLING & RE-USING YOUR SHOES

As proud champions of slow fashion, here at BB our shoes become a much loved part of our wardrobes and our lives.  Their handcrafted, artisan finish means our favourite shoes can last for years, but when the day comes when they’re finally past their best,  how do we make sure we’re recycling or disposing of them ethically? We investigated the best way to recycle and reuse our old shoes.

Take Care of Your Shoes

First and foremost, look after those shoes! Show them some love and attention and they’ll last much longer.  Invest in some shoes trees to keep their shape, and rotate your footwear choices to prevent certain pairs wearing out too quickly. Keep an eye on those heels and soles and replace as needed.  Check out our very own BB Shoe Care Guide to looking after our collection.

If you are looking for something closer to home, just head to your local high street – charity shops like Barnardo’sThe British Heart FoundationThe Red Cross and the PDSA are always looking for donations.

Recycle

We also love The United Shoe Recycling Company, who offer a dedicated shoe recycling collection service.  You can even request a collection container if you want to team up with friends or colleagues to recycle together, which we think is a great initiative.

If you are recycling trainers or athletic shoes, then we’d recommend checking out Nike Grind. For over 20 years, Nike has been collecting old and worn athletic shoes and recycling them to turn them into sports surfaces and running tracks.  Nike have collected over 28 million pairs to date, and they accept any brand of trainer.

Reuse

If you can’t bear to part with your old favourites, then why not get creative and try using them as plant pots? Here’s how to do it:

1. Use a drill or hammer and nails to make drainage holes in the bottom of the shoes to allow water drainage

2. Fill the shoes a small layer of drainage stones, then top with potting soil

3. Add the plants, carefully covering the roots with soil

4. Water the plant

5. Place in your garden or home and enjoy!
