Alicia's Zero-Waste Finds

As we all know, plastic is having a devastating impact on the environment, especially on the ocean and marine life. We need to come together and say no to single-use plastic and make conscious decisions on what we buy.

Plastic is very cheap and versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However, it has caused us to be addicted to a disposable lifestyle, constantly buying single-use plastic items, whether it’s throwaway cutlery or the packaging of your crisps. Over 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year and the damaged it has caused and is still causing to the planet and ocean life is catastrophic.

Marine life is dying from plastic consumption mistaking it for food. The consumed and indigestible plastic tricks the animal to think they are full and in turn, they starve to death. Animals are washing up on beaches deceased and have been found with their stomachs stuffed of single-use plastic. Last week another majestic animal was washed up ashore in Indonesia. Found in the stomach of the dead sperm whale were two flip-flops, 115 drinking cups, 25 plastic bags, and four plastic bottles.

It takes about 450 years for a plastic bottle to degrade, 10 to 20 years for a plastic bag, 100-1000 years for plastic cutlery and some plastic will never break down. That is why we need to stop using throwaway plastic and use products that we can use and will last a lifetime.

Our founder Alicia has her own cool products that are better for the environment and we want to share them with you.

A metal water bottle is another lifestyle essential!  Not only will you cut down crazy amounts of throwaway plastic, a bonus is you will also end up drinking more water.    Metal bottles keep your water cool and your beverages hot for hours.  Fire and Ice, Alicia’s choice, have an amazing range of water bottles with cool patterns and colours. They also have food flasks to keep your hot soups in for the winter months.

Bright Zine’s Ethical Toolkit, a box with a fork, spoon, chopsticks and a metal straw to keep in your bag instead of using disposable cutlery. Made from Polypropylene and wheat straw, the cutlery and box are not biodegradable but recyclable at the end of its life. Bright Zine’s aim was for the toolkit to replace throwaway knives and forks from on-the-go eateries and #endsingleuseplastic.

A simple way to help your planet is to use a bamboo toothbrush. Toothbrushes are often overlooked but they contribute to ocean plastic and never break down. Zero Waste Club’s Bamboo Toothbrush is the ultimate sustainable toothbrush. It comes in a recycled cardboard box, the bristles are recycled, the handle can go into a compost at the end of its life and you can buy new brush heads. Make a simple change now and help your planet.

Glitter is one of the worst things you can use with its tiny pieces that scatter our land and waters making it almost impossible to retrieve and very easy for wildlife to eat. If you do like to sparkle up for parties and festivals, there’s no need to worry as you can get guilt-free, biodegradable glitter. The vegan and cruelty-free glitter is made from    sustainable cellulose and packaged in recyclable and environmentally friendly materials.  First, apply the organic aloe gel with the bamboo brush and add glitter. So, the next time you want to glitter up, go and get yourself some guilt-free sparkles.

For a bright safe future and to help save the planet, it’s so easy to do your bit by avoiding single-use plastics.  There are many eco products that are now available. Reduce your carbon footprint by going zero-waste.  Set a challenge to avoid food with plastic packaging, use a metal water bottle, carry your Ethical Toolkit with you, if you want to glitter up, use biodegradable glitter. Do what you can to make a difference, love your planet and it will love you back.
